Born in 1977 in West London, Marc Gooderham is fast becoming the City’s most popular painter. After studying art and illustration at both Amersham Art & Design College and The University of Westminster, Marc temporarily exchanged his paint brushes for drum sticks and released a number of albums and singles to phenomenal commercial indifference. Following this sabbatical in the heady world of rock n roll Marc has returned to his first love of painting.
In his widely acclaimed new series, Marc presents a breadth of work concentrating on the city's decaying, unique architecture. The beautiful truth of London’s East end is revealed to us in the buildings we walk past every day, the streets we look down, and the slightly open windows, home to the anonymous friend we have yet to meet. It is through that age- that wearing- that we begin to ask ourselves about the stories we have yet to know. Desolate buildings, with their peeling paint, numberless front doors, and glimpses into empty rooms through un-curtained windows, naturally evoke loneliness inherent in any large city. But their stillness also invites contemplation – of the lives once lived here, and the new lives that continue to do so. On canvas the buildings retain their hard edges, giving them a boldness which suggests that even forsaken buildings serve a purpose in the city. “I have always lived and worked in London,” says Marc. “The city is the perfect source of inspiration. The textures of London's grey, unsettling skies are the perfect backdrop to the colourful street art that decorates the brickwork.” Working from personal observations, sketches and photographs, Marc captures the singular beauty to be found in the neglected buildings that have fallen into disrepair as the living city of London continues to evolve around them. “I do try to capture a certain sadness in the buildings I paint,” says Marc. “And also, I want to draw attention to parts of the city that are ignored on a daily basis. Above our heads are these fantastic shop fronts of crumbling and faded grandeur that most of us will pass by without a second glance.” The Beautiful truth of England’s capital continues to evolve, as Marc brings to the palette the overlooked vistas of London.
